Prominent art foundations from Taiwan and Indonesia have teamed up to launch a Taiwan pavilion at the 2021 Biennale Jogja. The biennale, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, will run from October 6 to November 14.
Taiwan’s participation in the event is the result of a collaboration between the National Culture and Arts Foundation’s ARTWAVE network and the Biennale Jogja Foundation.
Four artists will represent Taiwan at the event, which is the sixth part in a series exploring countries near Earth’s equator. This year focuses on Oceania, and will welcome Taiwan-based artists Rahic Talif, Chang Chih-Chung, and the artist duo Chiu Chieh-sen and Margot Guillemot.
All four artists are currently featuring in the 2021 Pan-Austro-Nesian Arts Festival at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.
Their works examine humankind’s relationship with the ocean from historical, geographical, cultural, and emotional perspectives. The works also aim to reconsider humans’ exploitation, seizure, and extraction of marine resources.
The National Culture and Arts Foundation is also working with the Biennale Jogja Foundation and partners from Taiwan and Vietnam to hold the 3rd Asian Curatorial Forum. The forum is set to take place on October 23 and 24 at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts.
Co-presenting the event are the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation and the Vietnam Institute of Culture and Arts Studies.
At a press conference to promote the biennale and the forum, Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation Chairperson Michael Hsiao said Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam have much in common. He says the countries share an “extensive historical connection” thanks to their “shared marine culture and Austronesian migrations”.
Hsiao says the biennale and curatorial forum will offer a “comprehensive experience of Austronesian art’s vibrant creative energy”.
